Chapter Thirteen
In spite of Reginaâs quizzical looks and intermittent efforts to bring the dinner conversation around to Ursula or Althea, Tessa rambled on somewhat inanely about whatever came to mind. She told Walter and Regina about an eight-foot alligator that had walked into a womanâs house in Tampa, Florida. The poor woman had come into the kitchen only to find the huge beast, thrashing about, evidently in search of food.
âWhat did she do?â Walter said.
âShe called 911,â Tessa said.
âThey must have thought it was some sort of prank,â Regina said.
âMaybe,â Tessa said. âI donât know.â
She had already lost interest. Then she asked Walter if the law intern in his office had given birth. Walter said he thought so, and why did she want to know, anyway?
Tessa said, âSo I can buy a present, of course. What did she have?â
âA baby,â Walter said. He was already scraping plates and stacking them. âDoes it matter?â
Regina rolled her eyes at Tessa, who smiled, happy to be allies again.
âWell, only if she doesnât mind dressing her son in a pink dress,â Tessa said.
âWhy would she do that?â Walter said.
âForget it, Mom.â Regina gave Walter a threatening look. âIâm not done.â She held onto her plate, discouraging his efforts to add it to the stack. âGet something in yellow.â
âThatâs an idea,â Walter said. âA yellow dress.â He laughed when Tessa and Regina exchanged exact looks of disbelief. âHa! You see? You think Iâm totally stupid, but Iâm not!â
âIndeed,â Tessa said, but she smiled and handed Walter her plate. She had barely eaten. âYou win, as always.â
âDo I detect a sore loser in our midst?â Walter said. âWhat do you think, Reggie?â
âIâm Switzerland,â Regina said. âI donât want to get involved. â She got up and took her own plate to the sink. âI have some work to finish.â
âNo dessert?â Tessa said. âI made some baked apples.â
âMaybe,â Regina said.
âWalter?â Tessa asked.
âDefinitely,â he said. âNot maybe like our indecisive girl here.â
Regina stood still at the sink until Walter nudged her aside so he could fill the kettle with water.
âI wrote an email to Althea,â Tessa said.
âReally?â he said. âWell, good for you. That must have taken some courage.â
âNot really.â Tessa was a bit thrown by his reaction. âI donât see how courage has anything to do with it.â
âNo? Thatâs interesting,â he said. âI would have thought youâd be reluctant to reconnect with Althea after all these years and after everything that happened.â
âWhat happened?â Regina said.
âNothing,â Tessa said. âNothing happened.â She scowled at Walter. âI thought we talked about this.â
âIndeed,â Walter said. He took three mugs from the cupboard.
âPreferences?â
âGreen,â Regina said.
âSame for me.â Tessa looked at Regina. âI thought you had work to do.â
âI do, but I canât miss this.â
âMiss it,â Tessa said.
While Walter filled the mugs with hot water, Tessa watched. No one spoke until Regina, looking from her mother to her father, finally said, âOkay. I get it. I think Iâll have my tea in my room. If you guys donât mind, that is.â She pretended to be offended.
